My Acceptance into the Carnegie Mellon Class of 2017!

Today marked a milestone in my life, as I received an acceptance letter from my school of choice, Carnegie Mellon.  I had been waiting for months, greatly anticipating this day.  Upon opening this letter, I became excited when I discovered that I had been accepted into the Carnegie Institute of Technology (CIT).  Ever since I took part in Carnegie Mellon’s Sleeping Bag Weekend, I knew that this was the school that I wished to attend.

After initially reading the letter, I was filled with dismay when I discovered that I had been wait-listed for Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE), the major that I intend to pursue.  However, after a few phone calls and a bit of research, I discovered that it was not a large issue, as freshman engineers do not declare their major until the end of the year, and students in CIT can declare ECE with little trouble if their grades are suffice.  ECE is a department under CIT and therefore, a separate application process is not required.

My plans are to pursue a Master’s in ECE and an MBA through their dual-degree five-and-a-half year program.  With this, I hope to become part of a major corporation, perhaps Apple, Microsoft, or Google, or maybe even become an entrepreneur bringing new technologies.

Carnegie Mellon is one of the best places that I could go to begin a career in technology, as it is a computer capital of the world.  CMU students begin to innovate before even leaving the campus, and the projects that they have participated in are amazing.

In addition, with their open campus policy, CMU contains the best of both worlds: liberal arts and science and technology.  They have everything from actors to musicians to physicians to computer nerds like myself.  Usually, the talents of Silicon Valley and Hollywood tend to be polarized and separated, but on this campus, they are intertwined, much like my personal interests.

I am honored to see that all of the hard work that I have carried out throughout my life has paid off.  I could have never done it myself though.  My parents have inspired me to take a higher road in education and work hard to achieve anything that I desire.  As an elementary student, my mother sat beside me, aiding me with my homework and ingraining a hard work ethic and desire to achieve inside of me.  My father has taught me the definition of work, how to budget (even though I am still a somewhat reckless spender), and has worked long hours to fund my current education.  I respect them both and thank them greatly for what they have helped me to achieve.  In addition, I thank my sisters, grandparents, friends, and family for always supporting me.

I would also like to thank Youth Motivational Speaker Jeff Yalden and all of my teachers for writing excellent letters of recommendations and aiding me in receiving this acceptance.  In addition to helping me during the admission process, they have taught me many life skills and philosophies that will last with me for a lifetime.  My teachers, Jeff, and my friends and family have been an inspiration to me and have spurred my desire to further my education to the maximum level that I can.
